Big Picture FAQs

Find Clarity – FAQs & Answers

I acknowledge you may have some questions before getting started, and that’s completely understandable.

Below, you’ll find answers to some common queries about coaching, counselling, and how we can work together. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, feel free to reach out!

What is the difference between coaching vs counselling?

Coaching & Counselling are two different things that need to be respected.

  • Coaching is a partnership to encourage and facilitate the creation, development and pursuit of both personal and professional goals. Whether it's life, career, personal or professional, I call it ‘coaching’ and have the qualifications and experiences to assist in these spaces.

  • Counselling is a therapeutic relationship working within a clear code of ethics.

Unsure which one you need? Don't stress, I can work through this in detail during our initial consultation and agree to which lane best suits you. However, given the ethical and technical guidelines, once you are within either a coaching or counselling lane, you can only stay in that lane. For example, if I provide coaching services and further into it I determine that you will require counselling, I will refer you to an external counsellor for this and vice versa.

How do I know if we are a good fit?

I pride myself on being relatable to all, however, the research shows the key to the success of a relationship is down to the connection between us. I won't be for everyone and if after the initial consultation there are any doubts from either side, we will call it for what it is. No hard feelings!

Is what we discuss confidential?

During our initial counselling session I will clearly explain the boundaries of confidentiality and you can be assured what you share will remain confidential. I adhere to the Code of Ethics of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors. The only exception is if I believe there is an imminent threat to either your safety or the safety of someone else.

Coaching I treat the same. You can be sure no one will ever know we worked together unless I get your express permission to do so.

Do I need a doctor or specialist referral to book either a coaching or counselling session?

No. Just book a session via the online link.

I have never been to counselling, what can I expect at our first session?

Relax. The first session is all about getting to know each other and you can share as little or as much as you are comfortable with.

What do you require from me as a client?

I need you to be committed and engaged in the process. I am not there to ‘fix’ you, while I will use my expertise and experience to help guide the pathway, I need you to be committed and as it is ultimately you who does the work.

How many sessions will I need?

After the initial session and an idea of what the issues are, I can provide an idea.

Typically , if navigating something heavy and current, sessions will be weekly or fortnightly, before spacing out.

You may also like to check in to help maintain the change and refresh anything thats come up.

I like the sound of getting outdoors, how do you decide what to do?

After an initial consultation and scoping of what you would like to work through, we can frame up a this can be anything from a day hike up a local mountain, to an overnight mission into the hills further afield.

Key factors will depend on location, time, costs, and level of fitness.
