What Is Counselling?

What to Expect in Your First Session

I understand that starting counselling can feel overwhelming. That’s why your first session is focused on getting to know you and understanding your needs.

You can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with, and together, we’ll outline a plan that best supports you.

Confidentiality & Ethical Practice

As a professional counsellor, I will become a provisional member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors and adhere to the Code of Ethics as of November 2025.

Your privacy is my priority, and everything discussed remains strictly confidential, except in cases where there is an imminent risk to your safety or the safety of other.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your unique situation. Typically:

  • Weekly or fortnightly sessions work best for deeper emotional work.

  • Sessions can be spaced out over time as you progress and build resilience.

  • Some clients choose to have occasional check-ins to maintain long-term change.

Coaching vs Counselling: Which One Do You Need?

If you’re unsure which path suits you best, don’t worry—we’ll figure it out together during your first consultation.

  • Coaching is forward-focused, action-driven, and goal-oriented. It’s about helping you take control and move toward success.

  • Counselling is about exploring emotions, processing past experiences, and healing from challenges. It provides a therapeutic space for self-reflection and emotional well-being.

However, due to ethical guidelines, once you begin either coaching or counselling, you must remain in that lane. If counselling becomes necessary during coaching, I will refer you to an external professional.
